city with a long historical tradition, and has been home to Romans, Visigoths and Moors. It is also home to
perhaps Spain’s most famous export, paella. It is connected with the Spanish hero El Cid and can boast
some of the most famous fiestas in the country, Las Fallas. Apart from this, the city also has some of the
best beaches in the region, and its location makes it the ideal point for exploring everything the area has to

From an elevation overlooking the city, the Castle of Henry II dominates the Águeda River valley. Ordered to be
built by Henry II in 1372, it is distinguished by its handsome crenellated keep. Nowadays the castle serves as a
modern Tourist Parador where travellers can spend the night in charming surroundings and build up their depleted
reserves with typical regional dishes, such as chanfaina (rice with diced chorizo and meat) or, fried egg and
farinato (a white sausage meat containing breadcrumbs, lards and seasoning). In 1895 Spain looked to General
Arsenio Martínez Campos to find a solution to the Cuban situation. He had all the right credentials: he had soundly
defeated the Carlists once and for all; he and Prime Minister Cánovas del Castillo had restored King Alfonso XII to
the throne in 1876 by installing a civilian-led constitutional system that would last until 1931; he had pacified
Cuba in 1878 with his military skill and political sensitivity. Another Romance language is Galician-Portuguese
which originated in Galicia at the beginning of the Middle Ages, and was carried by the Christian conquerors
outwards, to present day Portugal. Its first literary and notary text date from the 12th century. In the second
half of the 14th century, after producing a splendid literature, the language split into Galician and Portuguese,
for historical and political reasons.
