Dissent was as fiercely supressed in Cuba as in Spain, unwittingly creating heroes and martyrs of Cuban independence. The slave-holding economy of sugar and tobacco plantations added fuel to the movement for independence and, as in the South of the United States, resistence against the abolition that it would entail.
